Do the White Collar boxing they said. It'll be great fun they said. Who are these people, and who defined "fun" for them? Funny that, I reckoned the same thing every Wednesday night around 10 o'clock. "That wasn't the hardest session I've done". And I genuinely meant it. Until the following Wednesday night when Gavin would up the ante again. And again. Christ, the man must have a book of these exercises! Every week, we'd have a new one. To be fair, the biggest compliment you can pay him is that no 2 sessions are the same. Each one is different, and that's what makes the 6 weeks fly. And flew they did, over in the blink of an eye. We finished training last Friday night and it's onto "Fight night" this Saturday night in The Rathkeale house, all kicking off at 7PM.
I can't speak highly enough of the training to be fair. Everything you've heard is true, and then some. It challenges every muscle in your body and it also tests you will power. To not give up, and to keep pushing. That, and your desire to strangle Gavin! "Push it lads" has taken on a whole new meaning! And then you have Peter in the ring winding up the 2 boys sparring us. Peter knows his boxing, but even he has struggled to make something related to a boxer out of me! Can I box? No. Simple as. But I'll throw a few punches, and if all else fails, I'll run around the ring for 3 rounds. He can't hit me if I don't stand still. He being my brother! 'Big Daddy'. More like big mistake to even get into the ring with him! The man would pike round bales for you! I've a cunning plan, though. 3 Letters: R-U-N. Can't fail!
There will some 'interesting' bouts on the night. Not least Brendan and Shane. That will be a good battle, as will Brid and Barbara. To be fair, Peter has put together some good pairings and having selected 2 bouts is doing a disservice to the other boxers. Each bout has intriguing sub-plot to it. But you'll have to show up on the night to understand what I mean!
I have to doff my cap to each and every boxer; they've been good craic, trained with good humour, and the banter has been enjoyable. From epic fails at springing over ropes, hats going missing, people being mopped, people calling themselves 'boxers' inadvertently and being hung out to dry by it. It has all been done with good humour, and in the name of sport. Some of the one-liners from the 2 boys couldn't be repeated in company! The night of the weigh-in was good craic, but this may have something to do with the consumption of alcohol. Which Peter quite rightly pointed out was started by one person, and one person alone. We all followed with a pint, just to be nice. It's rude to see someone drinking alone!
The fight night is the last event, and I'm sure the nerves will be jangling on the night. From never having boxed before, to being able to won't help the matter! But whoever won a boxing match by boxing?! It won't be me anyway! Tickets are selling quickly, and it won't be long until the sold out signs go up. Then you'll have to buy a new television to go with the Sky subscription you'll need to watch it on pay-per-view! And that's never the same craic as being there!
